What happened to Subscene

Subscene ran from 2005 and closed on 3 May 2024. In its last weeks the community saved a final dump of the archive, language by language. That dump is what SubtitleCenter imports: the file, the release names it fits, the upload date and the uploader's handle, kept as a claimable identity. Nothing is renamed and nobody's credit is dropped.

What is the same

• One page per title with every language on it, grouped by language, sorted by rating or by date. Language sub-pages have their own address.
• The hearing impaired flag, the foreign-parts flag and the frame rate on every file.
• Uploader profiles with their files, their languages and their download counts. If you uploaded to Subscene, claim your identity and your files move under your account.
• Comments and sync votes on every file, and a saved language filter that follows you across every list.
• No countdown, no captcha, no account needed to download.

What is better

• TV series have real season and episode pages instead of one list per season, so an episode is one click and one address.
• Drop your video file on the Match page and the fingerprint finds the subtitle already in sync, without uploading the video.
• A free JSON API, RSS feeds per language, and the whole site's code public under the AGPL-3.0, so it cannot disappear the way Subscene did.
• Human and machine translated files are never mixed in one list.
